U.S. lawmakers have warned Ford Motor Co. that the automaker has until Friday to turn over documents related to its $3.5 billion electric vehicle (EV) battery plant under construction in Michigan that will use Chinese technology, or face potential consequences such as appearing before Congress.

The warning is just the latest setback in Ford’s partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) (300750.SZ), the world’s largest EV-battery maker. Amid controversy over the plan, Ford said on Sept. 25 that it had suspended construction of the plant, where it had planned to manufacture batteries using technology licensed from CATL.
