China Seeks to Get More Criminal Appeals Cases Their Day in Court

China’s top judicial authorities are looking to ensure more criminal appeals cases are heard in court by establishing dedicated statutes and systems to better facilitate the process, amid growing public concern over low hearing rate.
The Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Justice launched a year-long effort to promote the normalization of holding courtroom hearings in “second-instance” criminal trials beginning Sept. 1, according to a Tuesday statement from SPP.
